New Orleans: Open For Business

Monday January 16, 2006

Mardi Gras will be a reality this year, but with only six weeks to go, many restaurants are struggling to reopen in time. The difficulty of clean-up and reconstruction has been compounded by lack of money and staff shortages. Five months after Hurricane Katrina, the health department has approved less than 25% of New Orleans’ restaurants to reopen. Notable restaurants that remain closed include:

Bella Luna, The Bistro at Maison de Ville, Bon Ton Café, Café Sbisa, Christian’s, Commander’s Palace, Delmonico’s, Dominique’s, Dooky Chase, Gabrielle, Galatoire’s, Gautreau’s, Louis XVI, Mat & Naddie’s, Mr. B’s Bistro, The Pelican Club, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Sazerac Bar & Grill, Smith & Wollensky, Tortorici’s, and Uglesich’s. Hope remains strong that these and other restaurants will be able to reopen.

On the brighter side, several prominent restaurants have been able to open for business and visitors should have no problem finding an excellent meal in the Big Easy.
