Sangria is a traditional Spanish drink that combines wine and fresh fruit. There are endless ways to make this festive, refreshing drink to customize to your preferences as it pertains to fruit and wine; typically you can use white or red wines that you enjoy drinking, and add all kinds of fruits, whether citrus, berries, melons, and so forth. A sangria, however, can go beyond those ingredients, too.

This Mexican-style raspberry tequila sangria, for example, has a higher alcohol content than most sangrias thanks to the addition of the tequila. (Yes, you can combine those two alcoholic beverages.) Because of that, this sangria is as much a margarita as it is a sangria. Alcohol content aside, this cocktail mixes up well for a crowd and is a great option to serve along with spicy foods such as tacos, burritos, enchiladas, or other Mexican fare. It's a great way to use up fresh raspberries in the summertime from the garden.

Ingredients

  • 10 ounces raspberries, fresh, or thawed if frozen

  • 1 (750-milliliter) bottle white wine, preferably Spanish white, Sauvignon Blanc, or Pinot Gris

  • 1 cup tequila, silver

  • 1/2 cup triple sec

  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 (12-ounce) cans ginger ale

  • 1 lime, cut into wedges, for garnish

Steps to Make It

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. Place raspberries in a small bowl and mash with a wooden spoon or muddler.

  3. Add the white wine, tequila, triple sec, and lime juice to a large glass pitcher.

  4. Stir in the sugar and continue stirring until completely dissolved.

  5. Stir in the mashed raspberries.

  6. Cover the pitcher with plastic wrap and refrigerate for several hours or overnight.

  7. Just before serving, stir in the ginger ale and top off with ice.

  8. Strain the sangria into wine or margarita glasses.

  9. Add a wedge of lime to the rim of each glass.

  10. Serve and enjoy!

Tips

  • Always use a wine you would enjoy when making sangria as the wine will be the most prominent flavor. In this case, the tequila pairs well with the types of white wines we suggest, which include a Spanish white, Sauvignon Blanc, or Pinot Gris.
  • Sangria gets better the longer it sits, so don't hesitate to mix this up (except for adding the ginger ale) the night before you are planning to serve it. The fruit really sweetens the drink.

Variations

  • You can try this tequila sangria recipe with blueberries, blackberries, or strawberries, or a combination of those berries along with the raspberries.
  • Substitute lemon juice for lime juice, or use equal parts of both.
  • Use equal parts lime juice and orange juice, or lemon juice and orange juice.
  • Use a lemon-lime soda instead of ginger ale.
  • Sweeten the cocktail with a couple of tablespoons of agave nectar (which tends to be very sweet) instead of granulated sugar.
