Vermont Restaurants

By Brett Moore, About.com

Here is a short list of destinations to start your culinary pilgrimage. Most are within two hours driving time from Burlington, Vermont.

Burlington is Vermont’s largest town (40,000), home of the University of Vermont, and the state’s cultural center. Whether you fly or drive, Burlington is a good place to start your vacation.

Church Street, a pedestrian mall, is Burlington’s shopping epicenter. You’ll find many fine restaurants here.

NECI Commons (25 Church St., 802-862-6324) – An American Bistro with a menu featuring seasonal and local products. This is one of the restaurants of the New England Culinary Institute. They have an open kitchen, so you can watch the culinary students from your table as they prepare your meal. A very interesting and delicious dining experience.

Leunig’s Bistro (115 Church St., 802-863-3759) – Leunig’s is a European style café with a definite old world flare. The marble bar and crystal chandeliers make this quaint, casual restaurant feel very sophisticated and Parisian. During the warmer months, the windows are opened along the street, bringing the lively sounds of the mall into the dining room.

Smokejacks (156 Church St., 802-658-1119) – Smokejacks is a hip, upscale restaurant catering to young professional who enjoy really good food. They have a wonderful selection of American cheeses, many made locally in Vermont. Many of their dishes features produce grown by local farmers. An outstanding wine list, along with a creative drink menu, makes this a dining experience not to be missed.
